America in Afghanistan: What are we thinking?

By Zakia Isad

The war in Afghanistan started in response to the Sept. 11 attack on the United States. The perceived goal was to capture Osama Bin Laden and other key Al Qaeda members and punish them for their barbaric attack on the U.S. Unfortunately that goal was never achieved and with our attack on Afghanistan we drove Al-Qaeda leaders to Pakistan, caused destabilization in this neighboring country, and created another battleground to justify our presence in that region. Let’s be more realistic.

Zuliani shares her love of art with Chabot

By Carmen Shiu

Walking into Diane Zuliani's office in Building 1100, the white walls are surprisingly bare. There are papers all around her multiple desks that form a U-shape on the left end of her office. There are also some papers stacked moderately neatly on the floor.

Chabot is considering turning the bookstore management over to a private franchise. What's your opinion?

"All I can say is that it's stupid."

Chaz Martin, 19
Fire Technology

"I think it'll be bad. Because if it's privatized, then that private company is going to want to just make money. The prices of books are going to go up, I think it’s going to hurt students by making books more expensive and taking jobs away from students."

Jesus Martinez, 24
Mass Communication

"Whatever private company is taking over, I feel that they're going to raise the prices and students can’t afford it. I'm already on financial aid as it is. I just think it's bad.”"

Mike Brown, 18
Welding Technology

"I don't like the idea that they didn't consult students or faculty about changing the bookstore. I feel that they should've put it to a vote and ask us first."

Jeffrey Tran, 26
Mass Communication

I would like to reiterate my comment.

President Gutierrez says, "If an individual was to refer back to the ASCC Constitution and Bylaws, regarding that the ASCC must thoroughly adhere to the Brown Act, no where is it stated or mentioned other then in the Article VII: Meetings, Section I-B “Special Meetings”. Therefore, there is no formal documentation that we (ASCC and I ) have violated the law."

Is it just me who interprets her saying this to mean that because the ASCC Constitution and Bylaws contain no information about following STATE law, that they don't have to? Just because our school rules don't state that I can NOT publically expose my private organs, I can run around school naked? If our student leader is saying that school guidelines are above state law, I would like to suggest that everyone run around naked and cause mayhem! It's okay, because our student president is setting an example... right?

There must have been a bigger picture behind this minuscule seen, but it seems the viewers were only given so little as to extrapolate it into a criminals profile, which is likely what happens in these occasions. Also, if the meeting was held prior to said date, with good reason (such as an emergency with considerable consequences) would it not be wise to hold the meeting as soon as possible, rather than waiting for another 3 days to resolve the matter?

I truly admire her willingness to open up to the student body. It is truly the qualities of a leader.

I propose that Spectator publishes the Resolution, only then can we make an informed opinion about Jessica Gutierrez and wether or not it's a "personal vendetta" like it was stated. Gutierrez's implying that it was not her who made the violation but as PRESIDENT and previously mentioned "legislative director " she failed to correct and lead her team in the right direction and make sure the rules were being followed.....not a leader in my book.

I also find it contradicting, ironic and offensive that she would quote Caezar Chavez when her statement is full of excuses!!! she is obviously not a leader AND does not have what it takes to repair the "dissension & separation among Senators" as she states. It's hard to believe that she's doing her job when her senate wants to get rid of her....that is not someone I want to represent me in any way shape or form...again, I ask Spectator to publish the Resolution.

One last thougt: That's what happens when you put a girl in office.

A true leader would not shift the blame onto others nor would they make excuses for their wrongdoings.
Clearly, the President of Associated Students of Chabot College has never been ready for her position, since she still claims her core duties of holding a meeting (which she should have been extremely familiar with as a former Legislative Director), to be a "learning process". It's been over a year.. how much more time do you need to learn until you can do things properly?

This is truly disgraceful behavior. It is unfortunate that letters to the editor cannot be rejected if the author of the letter is making false statements. I have to say that it is a smart move to write a letter rather than be interviewed for an article where the reporter may uncover the truth!

Miss Guttierez states that she has never had training or given and orientation? WOW she attended workshops at at least 2 statewide student conferences and at least 2 ASCC retreats where she was drilled in the policies and procedures of the ASCC. She also had 2 past presidents as who she could have used as mentors if she really was interested in learning. This on top of the fact that she was last year's ASCC legislative director, a post that requires the person holding it to have a fair understanding of both robert's rules of order and the ralph m. brown act. WHAT WAS SHE DOING ALL THIS TIME? And worse yet to make such a bold statement in a public forum. She clearly does not care learn anything but is only trying to save herself so that she may put a fancy title on her UC application.

As for the minutes of September 16th, if anyone with a mild understanding were to read them you will note that LEGALLY that meeting should not have happened. The senate did not meet quorum (the minimum number of members needing to present to hold a meeting). In fact it states on three occassions that quorum was lost. WHAT A MESS!

What makes this worse is that the Advisor, who Jessica is making excuses for was actually hired almost a year and a half ago and was the one writing the minutes for the illegal meeting. So clearly Jessica has chosen the wrong ppl to learn from. How long does it take for someone to learn some SIMPLE rules. You don't even have to learn them by heart. just reference it when needed.

And as for personal vendetta, WHO THE HELL CARES? it doesnt matter if the person that wrote it doesnt like miss jessy. As a student i'm glad that we have real leaders who knows what they're doing. I couldn't join the senate because of time constraints but I would hate to know that ppl are just sitting back and letting incompetence reign!

A true leader would never be in this shameful mess. GOOD RIDDANCE!

P.S. can we have some events please Ms. President?

It's claimed that an action set forth to remove her from presidency is a personal vendetta. This seems to be a serious accusation, yet there lacks reasoning for why the author felt this way.

In my opinion, this letter to the editor is child-like behavior and makes it seem that the Associated Students of Chabot College President wants to put the blame on others. As if she's pointing the finger and saying 'they did it! not me!' Just admit your mistakes! If Ryan Belden had won, there might not have been any problems.
