Dear Editor,
Chabot had a meeting about the two power plants. At the meeting the contamination levels from the plants were reported. Hayward's city council will receive millions in pollution credits for a library.
It's hard to understand why such an informed council would sell out the public's health with such a greedy power plant decision! The air will be more carcinogenic and asthmatic.
Poisonous particulate matter will contaminate the Bay, from which our drinking water comes.
The corrosive ammonia will cause more algae to bloom in the Bay. One of the contaminants, Acrolein, which will be emitted by the plant, is so dangerous that it is used in tear gas.
Hayward's councilwoman, who was on the planning commission, admitted that there was no environmental impact report when they considered the plants. Will the council accept responsibility/liability if the people become ill? This is negligence!
Those plants will be near Chabot College. Chabot is being remodeled, but its enrollment could drastically drop as the air becomes more contaminated...
Couldn't these plants be built in a far less populated area? They should take the library money and build power lines from a non-populated area or create a greener energy source.
