Dear Editor,

I would like to thank you for your article on the carjacking here at Chabot. The Spectator was the only way the students here were informed of the incident.

There was an article on the carjacking in the local paper, The Argus, on Monday, Oct. 8. In the article the Chabot spokeswoman Jennifer Aries told the reporter that there was a system in place for just such an incident to get the word out to the students. According to Ms. Aries, an e-mail would be generated and sent to staff, who would in turn tell the student body.

Nothing like this happened on that day or any day since that which I have seen. When I brought this up in my classes on Oct 8, fully two weeks after the event, many students in those classes still had not heard anything about it. The few teachers that I spoke to about this told me that the e-mail was not generated until 22 hours after the event and that it was not even marked "urgent."

How is this supposed to protect the staff and students here at school from a gunman on campus? Obviously the system did not work and is in need of an immediate overhaul.

Thank you again for being our only source of information on what happened that day.

Sincerely
Lynn Tomkunas
