"We are steeped in the tradition of honor and sacrifice for the greater good. We are proud of this heritage. I believe that Americans are once again ready to achieve this greater good: which is nothing less than the security, prosperity, and unity of our country."
These are the words you'll find emblazoned on the intro page of Tennessee former Senator Fred Thompson's Web site. The site doesn't waste time getting to the point, asking you questions such as: Do you want to become a "friend of Fred?" and, do you want to "donate to Fred"? I guess this has become campaigning version 2.1 by Thompson, who has recently thrown his hat into the ring as a contender for the Republican nomination for the 2008 presidential election.
The 65-year-old Thompson recently announced he was vying for the Republican nomination on Jay Leno's The Tonight Show. The weekday program show has already seen its share of actors-turned-politicians, with Arnold Schwarzenegger using the same platform to announce his candidacy for California governor. Thompson, an actor himself, has most notably appeared on the show Law and Order playing a New York City district attorney, a role that fellow Republican presidential hopeful Rudolph Giuliani, has suggested was based on his own years working as the city's D.A.
The political commentators most often compare Thompson to the late president Ronald Reagan, who was a career actor before serving as California's governor and subsequently as president. The comparison may be a tough one to live up to in the eyes of many, with Reagan being anointed as destroyer of the Cold War. Despite the comparisons, Thompson pushes on with his 41-year-old wife Jeri Kehn by his side. Kehn, a Republican strategist has been cited as being a major inspiration if not the architect, of Thompson's campaign.
Although Thompson's pro-war, pro-gun and anti-immigration stance is not one that I agree with. I do agree with his views on family unity and reliance on education to keep America competitive on today's world stage. His failure to attract my serious consideration as a candidate is because he does not evoke a knee-jerk response from me when thinking of strong political leaders.
Obviously we are still more than a year away from the deciding vote, and months away from any real presidential primary. So as the time passes, and the political debates gain more news coverage and air time, we will start to get a better answer to the question: Just who is Fred Thompson.
