Wiaz Badar is the new ASCC President in charge of promoting campus clubs.

In spring 2007 the Associated Students of Chabot College, better known as the ASCC, elected their current president, sophomore, Wiaz Badar.

Wiaz came to Chabot knowing essentially that he wanted to participate in Chabot's student government.

After applying for the ASCC's senator positions in his freshman year, Wiaz became one of the first three applicants to be approved to the ASCC board.

Later during the 2007 spring semester he ran for president.
Every spring the ASCC holds an election for all executive positions which include presidential and vice presidential positions.

Wiaz's main goal is to see that the "ASCC runs efficiently and successfully" as stated in an interview in his office, Aug. 28.

To reach this goal, Wiaz would like all executive board positions filled and approved by the first ASCC meeting which will be held Sept. 5 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Board Room, Building 200.

The current proposed positions are:

President: Waiz Badar, Vice President: Jove Meyer, ICC Chair: Erik Elvebak, Legislative Director: Sophia Mendoza, Activities Director: Theresa Pedrosa, Communications Director: Pearl Woo, Marketing Director: Vacant, Financial Director: Vacant, Senator-At-Large: Vacant, Student Trustee: Vacant, ASCC Senators: TBA, ASCC Representatives: TBA.

What is the ASCC and what does it do, one might ask?

The ASCC is a group of elected students who represent the whole of the student body.

The main purpose of the ASCC is to help the students. One way the ASCC helps students is by collecting suggestions and complaints anonymously by way of the wooden suggestion box located in the cafeteria.

The ASCC collects these statements and brings them to the attention of the faculty and administration.

The ASCC also promotes student participation through extra curricular activities, such as the clubs on campus.

Clubs then come together with the ASCC chair in order to help campus life be as good as other colleges.

You might remember last year's Club Day. The ASCC was behind the scenes making sure the day ran smoothly.

The ASCC gives each club $300 as a start and will then match all funds up to $500 that the individual clubs create in revenue on their own.

Wiaz believes this motivates the clubs to do more events on campus, thus involving the student body, and then rewards the clubs for it.

For those who are new to the campus or who simply missed out on it, Club Day is when most clubs participate in recruiting new members and showing off what their club does best; like the gamers who set up their TV and game consoles.

Club Day is the opportunity to let students know about the clubs and give them a chance to meet new people who share similar interests.

ASCC President Wiaz is hoping to have the next Club Day as early as October.

The ASCC also co-sponsors Chabot College Movie Night, and helps organize the annual Gladiator Welcome Day.

ASCC members were the ones who gave tours, handed out free lunches and prizes, as well as helped lost students find classes.

For more information on the ASCC or the clubs on campus visit the ASCC office in Room 2311 Building 2300.
