The Chabot College women's tennis team's incredible season came to a bittersweet end after their undefeated record was finally broken in the Northern California Dual Team Playoff finals.
In what should have been a showdown, the Lady Glads suffered a shocking love-5 defeat at the rackets of No. 1 ranked Sierra College.
Going into the finals match ranked second in Nor Cal, the Lady Glads' dreams of capturing a title were shattered in singles competition.
Not only was there no need for doubles play, Tiffany Villanueva's singles match was suspended because the competition was already decided.
Although this is a tragic end to an amazing season, life is not as bad as it seems for Chabot.
Tiffany Villanueva, Megan Kummer, Shari Kakiuchi, and Jackie Park have all qualified for singles competition in the state tournament.
Not to mention that the ladies remained undefeated the entire course of the season, and it wasn't until the finals that it took the No. 1 ranked team in the state to hand them their only defeat of the year, leaving the Lady Glad's season final record at 17-1.
That sour, bitter, foul, final one.
The blemish on what otherwise would have been a season of perfection began when Sierra's Alexis Siemens defeated Chabot's Kummer 6-3, 7-5.
From there dominoes would falls as Sierra's Yoko Kuwashima defeated Emilie Murillo 6-2, 6-1. Jessica Harris defeated Kakiuchi 7-6, 6-2.
Annika Boschma continued the the pounding by defeating Park 6-love, 7-5. And Polly Todoroya defeated Tam Tran 6-2, 6-2.
Villanueva was scheduled to play a third set in her match against Jessica Miller after splitting the first two 4-6, 6-1, but play was suspended after the fifth match of the competition had been decided.
It hurt's to say that there is someone else better than you, especially if you lose a championship match in this fashion. And for the Chabot College women's tennis team, nothing truer could be said.
Not only is Sierra the only team that can lay claim to the right of being better than Chabot in Nor Cal team play, but in Nor-Cal singles and doubles tournament play as well.
Sierra's Kuwashima defeated Villanueva in three sets during the quarterfinal of the singles tournament. Miller defeated Kummer in three sets during the semi-final round.
In double's competition at the Nor Cal tournament, Sierra's Harris and Siemens defeated Villanueva and Kummer in three sets during the semi-final round, and Kuwashima and Boschma defeated Kakiuchi and Park in three sets during the quarter-final round.
