Last Saturday May 12, Chabot College held its first Open House to over 2,000 prospective students, and their families.

The sun was out, so were the clouds, along with a cool breeze, as people walked around campus trying to get to know Chabot. Many high school students who had signed up for the early morning orientations were walking around with nametags, and many others also carried around black plastic Open House souvenir bags.

Besides getting to know the different departments of Chabot, Open House also allowed future students the chance to register for classes and to get their student ID cards. Everyone from Campus Safety to the Student Credit Union had tables set up to meet and greet prospective students.

When asked what his thoughts were on Open House, Chabot college president, Robert Carlson said it turned out, "better than I really thought." Carlson credited much of the Open House, success to Katherine Tollefsen.

With tables set around the Grand Courtyard, future students and others, had the chance to visit and learn more about each of the colleges' different programs and departments. Each stand was uniquely set up to attract the interest of visitors. The Chabot College Alumni Association for example, handed out large Hershey bars when people joined them.

Some of Chabot's best paintings and ceramics were showcased and visitors were even given a chance to buy them if they wanted. Demonstrations were also given on painting and the creation of a ceramic vase.

Most of the entertainment for Open House was being lead by local campus radio station KRCH. Besides playing many popular songs, the radio station also held host to a number of performances from campus programs, like belly dancers and line dancers. But the radio station wasn't the only place music came from. Near the little theater the Jazz band set up and played catchy classical tunes.

Food was abundant. The Open House information table had trays of small sandwiches and fruits for people to pick from. At the center of the courtyard, four large barrel grills were set up to barbeque food for the visitors.

When people could no longer find hamburgers in the courtyard, people followed the alluring smell of hamburgers to the automotive department building. When asked, what was one of the things he liked about Open House, Arroyo High School student Arthur Diaz said, "The free breakfast was good."

Diaz who came to register with many of his friends, also said that one of things he liked was that, "I got to choose all my classes" and his friends agreed.

Besides using hamburgers to get people to visit them, the automotive department also held a small car show behind it's building, in Parking lot E, to attract people over. Some of the cars that were featured were a classic Ford Model A, a red GT Mustang, and a yellow Corbin Sparrow, which is a single passenger electric car.

Katie Schmidt, who came down all the way from Sacramento with her mom said she learned about Open House through the online orientation. Katie said the only thing she didn't like was, "the line for student ID pictures". Katie's mom, Laura Schmidt commented that "as a parent, I loved it. It [Open House] answered a lot of questions,"

Carlson also said that he planned to meet with Open House organizers to discuss what went well and what went bad during the event. Carlson added that he hoped "to try it again every year, and do it bigger and better".

Other than the line for student IDs, the only other complaint came from Jerry Sung, who said, "this event is too early."
