Alicia en Wonder Tierra comes to Chabot
Ramos, Joe
Issue date: 5/3/07 Section: The Scene
The Chabot College Theater Arts Department is producing Alice in Wonderland with a Hispanic twist. You too can take a trip to a fantasy land with Alicia en Wonder Tierra, May 19, 2007.
Linda Amayo, the director, said, "The play is a Mexican-American version of Alice in Wonderland with a touch of the Wizard of Oz. It's about a young Mexican- American girl who has not been in touch with her cultural roots and [the] journey to find those roots."
As it begins, Alicia is a typical Hispanic youth who subconsciously has assimilated to the Americanization of her culture. When Alicia notices a small Mexican doll named Rosa, she is taken into a world where the traditions of Mexican culture come alive.
While searching for Rosa she meets a band of unique characters who help her through her quest and finally to find herself.
Silvia Gonzalez, a playwright from Los Angeles who now lives in Oregon, wrote the play.
The reason why Ms. Amayo, chose this play she said, "I have a history with this play. I first performed it in Kansas City at the Coterie Theater, with one of the top three children's theaters in the country, and I also performed this play at the Berkley Rep."
You too will enjoy the character of Alicia and her journey to discover herself.
It doesn't matter what ancestry you have came from. You to will be able to relate to her and her cultural journey.
Alicia is played by Astrid Ramos, a newcomer to the Chabot theater department who brings a new dimension to the play.
Ramon, her tour guide, is performed by Alex Miranda whose extremely funny and energetic personality shines through his character.
Armadilla is performed by Janela Aguirre, a veteran of Chabot Theater Arts who has a beautiful way about her and who also appeared in La Posada last December.
The last character is Horny Toad played by Samuel Chaires, another great Chabot actor who plays multiple other personalities.
The final show is on May 19, for the general public. See Linda Amayo in the Theater Arts Department for more information.
