Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 victory of the Mexican army over the French at La Batalla de Puebla or The Battle of Puebla.

Although Mexican forces were greatly outnumbered, under the command of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin, they triumphed.

With this victory, Mexico demonstrated to the world that Mexico and all of Latin America were willing to defend themselves against any foreign intervention no matter the odds.

The site of the battle is now a park in Puebla with a statue of General Seguin proudly riding horseback.

It is a common misconception that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16th.

The Battle of Puebla took place 41 years after Mexico's independence was won in 1821.

Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican national holiday, but in the United States, the celebration is more festive consisting of parades, music, folklore, dances and food.

Downtown Hayward will be hosting its own celebration this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., complete with food, live music, and cultural booths.
