The Chabot College men's and women's swim team celebrate their coast conference success.

The Chabot College swim team has had another excellent year under head coach Greg Kubicki with the women's team going undefeated, 6-0 and going on to capture the NorCal title.

The men were right behind the women placing second behind West Valley, the team expected to run away with the conference.

As if going undefeated and capturing a title wasn't sweet enough, the Gladiators did it with no home pool. The Chabot College pool has been under reconstruction since February and has forced the Gladiator swim team to schedule home matches on the road.

When asked how this affected the teams Kubicki answered, "It was interesting, all the meets were away, you don't have that connection with the student athlete every day, so in that sense it was awkward. But in the end it showed the athletes that really wanted to be there and make a team."

Coach Kubicki added "It's just different when you don't have your home pool, it's fun to travel, but when you go to every meet away, logistically, considering people's schedules, they're all full-time students obviously, but also many of them work, and have the regular commitments of life, I think they had to really step it up and make the adjustments to be here."

The Lady Glad's finished with 639.0 points to win the conference title, 102.5 more points than the nearest competition, the College of San Mateo, a team six swimmers stronger than the Gladiators.

Kubicki said of his team "We've had a lot of stars in the past. This year we had a few, but throughout the whole team, we were stronger. I think that made a big difference in the season."

Coach Kubicki has been the Chabot College swim team head Coach since the 2000 season, and has won eight titles during his tenure, five with the women and three with the men.

Chabot's individual conference champions are Devon Farmer in the 200, 500, and 1650 freestyle events.

Farmer also placed first in these events and scored 60 individual points during the state qualifier. Other Gladiator conference champions are Jill Lothian in the 100 freestyle, Mike Kasten in the 100 fly, and Max Greer in the 50, and 100 backstroke competitions.

Among the state qualifiers, the top finishers for Chabot were Jennifer Silva in the 100 fly and Lothian in the 50, and 100 freestyle. Greer qualified in the 50, and 100 backstroke, and 50 freestyle, and Kasten in the 50, as well as 100 freestyle, and the 100 fly.

In the relays the women placed first in the 200, 400, and 800 freestyle, and the 200 medleys.

Coach Kubicki said, "What makes this team special, speaking about the guys, they ended up coming second in the league, they really were a close group, and they fought really hard."

The men placed second after losing dual meets to West Valley and DeAnza.

Kubicki went on reflecting about one of the meets. "West Valley was pretty much going to run away with the men's title this year, and they did. But our biggest goal was to come in second and avenge that loss to DeAnza. We ended up beating them by 16 points."
