Virginia Tech in shambles

Delayed safety response in tragic event has caused questions about how fast Chabot College will react

Issue date: 4/19/07 Section: News
Surprisingly there are not any in-depth plans concerning what students should do when an individual walks on campus and starts shooting, nor is there a back-up plan of action to get the information around campus in a timely fashion. College campuses are not typically set up to deal with situations like this one, some college campuses have a zip code of their own, and they need to be fully equipped the students knowledge should be up to par as well when it comes to knowing what to do.

Shootings on campuses are no longer fiction, which leads to people questioning whether or not they are safe, and as soon as the administration answers these question the better prepared Chabot will be.

"I just think that we need more campus security around here; my cousin goes there, [Virginia Tech] and it's just hard for me, it's just crazy, the world is crazy,"said 22 year-old psychology major, Maurice Johnson.

The reconstruction of buildings allows for phones to be in classrooms, and the administration has also been discussing whether or not we should there be a public address system. Both systems are very crucial elements when it comes to saving lives and getting the information around campus.

A college campus is unique not only because of the students, but because there is a lot of different things taking place on campus and information can never get to everyone, which makes it a lot harder.

"I don't know if we can do much because if it is going to happen, and they put their mind to it, they are going to do what they want to do," said 26 year-old computer science major, William Eberly.

"Our campus as well as most college campuses is the safest in our community. There is no way to prepare for something like this. The Virginia Tech situation is sad and horrific," said President Carlson. " ...We need to consider the tragedy that took place, because it is not anything anyone would normally expect."
