More than 30 years ago, a man by the name of John McConnell founded the first Earth Day celebration.
The International Earth Day festivities are meant to take place during the spring equinox, which symbolizes rebirth and renewal on March 20. Nationwide, it is celebrated on April 22; it is a secular holiday, observed mostly in English-speaking countries.
This was started to initiate political action to fight pollution and promote conservation and also to publicize the importance of biodiversity while highlighting other environmental concerns in efforts to protecting the Earth.
Over the past week, Ohlone College in Fremont and the University of California, Berkeley have expanded Earth Day into Earth Week, offering seminars and daily events with informational booths.
There are various other events occurring throughout the month of April. For more information, please look at the chart above. For other options for Earth Day, go to http://www.earth911.org.
