The rally to save College Hour has turned into something much larger than that. It is now focused on student rights.
The College Hour issue has brought to light the long-standing thought of a few ASCC members that the administration is not following its own governing documents, which state that any issue concerning the student body shall receive due input from the students.
One organizer of the rally, Daniel Hinds, recently commented that "The big picture is that the administration has taken step after unlawful step, significantly reducing opportunities for students to get involved and have a voice."
Vice-president of Academic Services Ron Taylor explained the decision to fill College Hour with scheduled classes was a necessary action. "There were a couple pretty thorough discussions in November and December about this, and it wasn't just about College Hour, it was the general shift that's needed in the college schedule."
The lack of a director of student life who would lobby for and support the ASCC, is by some students thought to be the main reason most of the College Hour scheduling has occurred.
According to Chabot president Robert Carlson, "The Director of Student Life is still in the table of organization...it's not a position we are eliminating; we're just not filling it right now along with two other dean positions because we can't afford to do it and still take care of what we think are the more essential services."
Currently there is a coordinator of student life, which is not a high enough position, some feel, to have much power and time to spend solely on Student Life.
During the rally there will be a petition passed, which cawwlls for changes from the administration. One of the stipulations is the appointment of a new director of student life to relieve the coordinator of many duties and more efficiently run the Office of Student Life.
