"Cliques" are infamous in society, and no matter where you are in your educational career you will always find a various and diverse group of people who stand for something.
In high school you would have the jocks, the drama students and the over achievers. In four-year colleges you have the fraternities and sororities. Here at Chabot there is another form called clubs.
Chabot College's clubs are not formed like fraternities or sororities, and are not divided into specific categories such as jocks or over-achievers, but in another way. The clubs at Chabot are normally directed to a certain career, ethnicity or way of life. Every semester these clubs are given one day when they can all collectively promote themselves, Chabot College's Club Day.
What is Club Day? According to Waiz Badar, newly appointed ICC chair, "Club Day is for the clubs to promote themselves. There is free food provided by the ASCC and a chance for the clubs to meet new potential members and make new contacts with other students. Also, there are often competitions for clubs to participate in, such as best table, which give an opportunity for the club to raise funds."
This year Club Day will be held on March 15 in the cafeteria between 12-1 p.m. About 10 clubs will be participating in Club Day which include, Tropa (Filipino-American Club), GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance), the Italian club, Dental Hygiene Club, Snow Dogs (snowboarding club), GZR (video gamers club), Puente and the Beach to name a few.
However, Club Day this semester is being combined with a rally put on by the ASCC protesting the dismissal of College Hour and other students' rights. This combination did create some controversy for certain club officers. Tascina Shelton, ICC (Inter-Club Council) representative for the Student California Teacher Association said in an interview, "I don't think it is going to be a good idea to combine them. It is going to be too hectic."
Though there are few that fully support the idea to combine the idea of the ASCC putting on its rally at the same time as the clubs try to promote themselves. Aaron Moss, ICC representative for the Italian Club said, "I support the ASCC rally on the same day as Club Day. The rally is being held for the students and their rights, and with the dismissal of College Hour (one of the reasons for the rally) many clubs could not meet because of conflicting school schedules."
