Club Day/ Rally:
The ASCC and the Inter-Club Council are sponsoring Club Day and a "Fight for College Hour Rally," at noon, March 15 in Building 2300. This is a great opportunity for students to learn about the various clubs on campus while allowing student voices to be heard in regards to saving College Hour.
Hayward Power Plant:
On March 6, the Hayward City Council delayed for one week a vote on the proposed gas-fired power plant at 25101 Clawiter Road, Hayward.
After about three hours of discussion over the power plant, a motion to find the power plant inconsistent with the city's zoning ordinances was put forth by Council Member Barbara Halliday and seconded by Council Member Kevin Dowling.
However, Council Member Bill Ward used his council prerogative to table the vote for one week. Mayor Michael Sweeney and the other council members chose not to override Ward's council prerogative and disappointed those in the audience.
About 100 Hayward residents attended the council meeting to review the power plant proposal that would have 14 70-foot tall smokestacks built within one mile of multiple schools and residences.
Most residents spoke in opposition to the power plant, citing noise, traffic, air quality and other environmental impacts that would result from a power plant.
Representatives from Tierra Energy, the company that proposed the new power plant, also spoke at the meeting and requested an additional 45 days to talk with community members before the council voted on the matter.
Mayor Sweeney, however, put the vote on the agenda for the March 13 8:00 pm meeting next Tuesday. Interested parties are encouraged to attend, and city council meetings are held at 777 B St. in Hayward.
The California Energy Commission (CEC), the state agency that grants licenses to power plants, will also have public meetings sometime in the fall of this year to make a final decision on the proposed power plant.
The CEC will take into account any decision provided by the Hayward City Council.
