Friday, March 9, at 8 p.m., the Chabot College Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble will be performing at the Performing Arts Center. They will be performing along with trumpet legend, Lew Soloff.

Lew Soloff was born in New York City on Jan. 20, 1944, and has been playing the trumpet since he was 10 years old. In 1968, he won a Grammy Award with the group Blood Sweat and Tears. He is a soloist and an expert with the plunger mute.

Allen Del Rosario, a pianist for the Chabot College Jazz Ensemble, and speaking on their behalf said, "It feels pretty cool and an honor to play with Mr. Soloff." Del Rosario and the rest of the Jazz Orchestra and Ensemble will meet with Lew Soloff, as he flies in from New York City, for the first time on Thursday for a rehearsal. "We are kind of nervous because not everything is getting together, but we're getting it there, "Del Rosario also stated.

According to Del Rosario, the Jazz Orchestra and Ensemble have been practicing for this set for about two to three weeks. "During the school year we read through many different pieces of music and whichever ones that we like, we choose that for our set," said Del Rosario.

How does the Chabot College Jazz Orchestra and Ensemble get someone like Lew Soloff to come and perform with them? Instructor Jon Palacio is the one who was able to bring Soloff here to Hayward. Palacio has a lot of contacts with a lot of jazz musicians and the music industry. Del Rosario said, "He [Palacio] has kept in touch with a lot of his contacts and they're all about helping the kids learn for educational purposes."

If you have nothing to do this Friday night, you can come to the Performing Arts Center and bring your family and friends and watch a legend at work, as Chabot College's Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble accompany Soloff. Tickets will be $20 at the door.

The Chabot College Jazz Ensemble is made up of Steven Turner, Matt Alcober, Ryann Hernandez, Armen Savadians, John Laco, Mike Beal, Tina Jupp, Jackie Lum, Ken Yee, David Sanchez, Jahvance Butler, Adam Terry, Allen Del Rosario, Tori Lyon and Asédo Wilson.

The Chabot College Jazz Orchestra consists of Guido Fazio, Tony Gallardo, Chris Pearson, Aaron Ashkenasy, Mike Wilson, John Morillas, Mack Horton, Guy Celestre, and Al Gonzalez.
