Downtown Hayward's very own Sun Gallery is hosting the 12th annual Cray-Pas Wonderful Colorful World Contest exhibit and the 18th annual Children's Book Illustrators exhibit.

Saturday Febr. 10 was the reception for both exhibits, which will be on display until May 25.

The Cray-Pas exhibit consists of 150 art pieces created by children nationwide. Children ranging from kindergarten to eighth grade entered this contest in the hopes of winning a $200 U.S. savings bond along with art supplies for themselves and their school.

The pieces were selected from nearly 4,000 entries nationwide. Each art piece entered uses Cray-pas which is a crayon pastel. When selecting the winners, "The judges looked for composition, oil pastel techniques and an emotional appeal in the art work," said Julia Reed, Cray-Pas contest administrator.

Accompanying the Cray-Pas exhibit is the Children's Book Illustrators exhibit. This exhibit displays the illustrations of various children's book artists. "I loved to curate these wonderful illustrations and also the children's art is super and uplifting to a community where art is not recognized as an essential part of your life," said Veronica Dondero, executive director of the Sun Gallery.

Following these two exhibits, the Sun Gallery has a lot planned for the spring. Dondero added, "Salad Mixed, an all women exhibit, including me, will be on display this upcoming spring." Following this, there will be a fundraiser. "We have scheduled a fundraising event at the Hayward City Hall Rotunda this May 19," said Dondero. This fundraiser will consist of Latin dancing and Mexican food.

"I would like to invite our community to participate more in the arts. We provide the community with many great art education programs for all ages. We would like to have more volunteers that help us with our shows," added Dondero.
