It took a little over a week for these three hoses to drain the pool dry.

All the water from the swimming pool has literally been "sucked up" as part of the campuswide renovation funded by the Measure B Bond Program.

The pool is just one of several amenities on campus to receive a makeover.

"[The construction] will make it better for the community," said project manager, Grace Seferian. "The pool will look much nicer."

The estimated finish date is sometime in June, according to Seferian. "It's a four-month job."

The plan to revamp the pool had been green-lighted sometime last year. The pool had started to be drained last Monday, Feb. 12. It took a little over a week for the Olympic-sized pool to be drained, using hoses that were only two inches in diameter.

"We started with three [hoses], and now we're down to one," said construction manager, Pat Lehfeldt, Monday morning.

Meanwhile, two construction vehicles were on the opposite sides of the pool, surrounded by large slabs of concrete piled on top of each other.

Seferian said that this pool project costs "less than $2 million." According to minutes from a January board of trustees meeting, the board set the pool budget at $1,848,100.

Many features of the pool will be brand new. Seferian explained that the pool floor will be re-plastered, chlorine tanks and pumps will be replaced, underwater lights will be added and the deck as well will be repaved.

While this lengthy construction is in process, the Chabot swim team will be slightly inconvenienced.

"It's a temperament to the team, and so far, they're pretty good about it," said head swim coach, Greg Kubicki.

They will have to practice off-campus and take about a three-minute drive to Southgate Swim Club. The pool consists of five lanes and is small compared to the pool of Chabot.

Chabot frequently hosts swim meets, but this year, "all meets are away," said Kubicki.

Although it will be a few months until the pool is finished, Kubicki only has good feelings about this temporary transition.

"We're excited about the new pool," said Kubicki.

The next swim meet will be on Friday at 2 p.m. in Aptos at Cabrillo College.
