The success of an athlete depends on many different types of things. Such things include, agility, skill and stamina. However, there are more than just the physical skills that can affect an athlete. These include the playing conditions. For example, take a football player who is used to warm climates and then has to play a championship game in heavy snow. Lighting may also hinder the way a player plays or may approach a game. But is that the case here at Chabot College? Do the coaches have a problem with the lights in Chabot's gym?

According to Steve Daprato, the athletic director for Chabot College said, "The lights at Chabot are fine. There is nothing wrong with them." Daprato mentioned that the players adjust to the light system, and that they do fine. The men's basketball coaches also agreed that the lights in the gym do not bother them or give them a problem.

Chabot's sister college, Las Positas College, has a better light system than Chabot, but Daprado said "Las Positas' lights are better than Chabot's because the Las Positas gym is new." The Las Positas gym was constructed during the 2004-2005 school year and opened in the fall of 2005.

The athletic director for Las Positas College, Lisa Everett, said, "Correct lighting is critical to the performance and comfort of both players and spectators. For this reason, all gymnasiums should have an appropriate source and level of light. The American College of Sports Medicine's (ACSM) Health/Fitness Facility Standards and Guidelines recommend a sufficient number of fixtures to provide even illumination of at least 30-50 foot candles."

Will Chabot make changes to the lights? Daprato stated that it is in the last part of the bond measure for the gym to get renovated and get new lights. "In about three to fours years, the lights at Chabot will get redone," said Daprato.
