They make that noise when practicing for the shot put. But screaming is not the most important thing for the team. "It lies more in the technique. The hardest thing is learning the technique of how to throw the 9 pound ball," explained Shiela Cleland, one of the two returning throwers on Chabot's track and field team.
She is joined by returning teammate David McDonald and first-time team members Craig Simpson, Rob Gire, Laura Zimbrick, and Teki Pahulu, under third year coach Amy Thiel. Even though it may be the first time for most of the throwers, they have been training since fall semester.
Freshman Pahulu, who just transferred from San Francisco City College, described how he's been enjoying the team. "It feels good being on the team, knowing that I just started last week," he said.
Pahulu continued adding, "I played football at City College, and it's different from this. Here you need to learn the basic techniques as opposed to just muscling your way through."
Pahulu's first year teammate, Simpson, also loves the track and field experience. Looking ahead to next week's track meet in San Mateo, Simpson commented "I think I will do fair at next week's meet, but by the end of the season I should be better and be where I want to be."
Simpson will be coming back next year, working to continue to improve and earn a scholarship to USC.
Everyone else seems happy about being on the team and coach Thiel is out there doing her best to get the throwers ready for next week's confrence preview held in San Mateo Friday Feb. 9. Most importantly, Chabot continues to try to improve throughout the rest of the year.
