What has happened to life and activities on campus?

Not much, and that is the problem. Chabot College lacks the college experience; many students lack the knowledge of what happens at Chabot. Some campus events are better advertised than others leaving some to wonder who does the master scheduling?

Chanel Martinez, a Chabot cheerleader said about this subject, "There's tons to do, it's just that students aren't involved enough. Everyone thinks they'll be teased if they get involved."

Students at Chabot need events and concerts that they can be involved with that aren't demographic specific. Sincere, a full-time student, said, "Clubs should try to reach students more; there should be events and performances. The ASCC should sponsor concerts and other events that people would be interested in."

Many clubs would host events if they had the money, which brings up another good question. If there is so much money supposedly waiting in Chabot's student activity accounts, why isn't any of it being dispersed to enrich campus life? To state it simply, it is all of the red tape and bureaucratic processing that is stopping Chabot from being lively and involving students in its culture.

There are always artistic and community events going on at Chabot, but very few targeted solely toward students. De-stress week, Club Day, and International Night are a few of the memorable events from last semester, but there should be more.

Nancy Chan, a former Chabot student, recalled, "When I went here, there were all of these posters, but clubs didn't seem to do much other than put up those posters."

Currently there aren't even many posters up, so it is difficult to determine if there are any open clubs that would welcome members or advertise upcoming events. This also begs a new question; Where are the clubs?

Currently there are 26 clubs listed on the Associated Students of Chabot College Web site but the majority are unknown to the majority of students. When interviewed, Chastity Whiteside, a current student, said, "I don't really see anything, they (clubs) really aren't present except for the big get-togethers and barbecue days. I see posters here and there but not much more."

The ASCC is slated for numerous events this semester, some of which will undoubtedly be approved, such as Club Day; others will be shot down, as is the norm for bureaucracy. However, this does not mean that they, along with other associations and clubs, aren't trying. Perhaps it is time for the rest of Chabot to put in an effort.
