Imagine that you are on stage, or you are in front of your class and you are about to give a speech. Your hands are clammy and moist your knees are shaking and you are beginning to break out in a cold sweat.
They say, "Other than dying the next thing people are afraid of is public speaking." That is unless you are on Chabot College's Forensics Team. What is Forensics? Forensics is competitive Public Speaking. Forensics involves separate areas from Persuasive and Informative speeches like you see in English 1A to Speech and Debate, Dramatic Interpretation, to Oral Interpretation of literature and Impromptu Speaking?
The Chabot Forensics team is rocking the house. They took second place in many events at the University of The Pacific event entitled Delta Swing in Stockton, California in early November taking home 28 trophies. There were ten students competing at this conference and eight of the ten brought home two awards.
At the end of the month the Forensics team held their annual 'Speech night," at Chabot's Little Theater. This years Speech Night began with persuasive speaking. The topic was "Prison Reform" by Nam Tran. The next category was Dramatic Interpretation by Barbara Tanner whose piece was entitled, "Taman."
Next there was a Duo Interpretation of Literature by Randy Sao and A.S. Cobb entitled the "Matador" there was also an oral interpretation of literature (which is almost like acting because you have memorized your piece). And there was an after dinner speech.
What is Speech and Debate? Speech and Debate is when several forensic teams research and debate a controversial topic such as abortion, gun control, etc or what ever the selected topic is. They are broken down into two opposing teams. They then try to prove their point in a debate much like the debates we saw in the 2004 Presidential debate with President Bush and Kerry.
"If you plan on transferring to another college or university Speech & Debate will give you the job skills you need to compete," said Jason Ames, Director of Chabot's Forensics Team. "It will prepare you for job interviews, thinking on your feet quickly and for life and job skills in the business world or any other type of business where you are in contact with people."
