This holiday season, instead of giving one of those stars that are so distant they require a telescope to locate, order an actual commemorative brick and dedicate it to a loved one.
"The Pathway to the Future Campaign is a great way to contribute to Chabot College and leave a lasting memory," said Heidi Finberg, assistant director of the Chabot College Foundation.
As apart of the foundation's campaign, contributions are tax deductible and will go back to the school to benefit students, faculty, and academic programs.
According to Finberg, the foundation's mission is "to strengthen academic success by providing financial support for students and programs."
Like a diamond is forever, these engraved 4-by-8-inch grey granite bricks will remain a part of Chabot's history. They will be permanently placed in "Founder's Square," a specially designated area at the main entrance of the college.
The bricks will be arranged into the ground in a circular pattern surrounding the flagpole. "It is the first phase of our brick program," Finberg said. The area she described "will include reflective lighting, bench seating and the engraved bricks. Once all bricks are sold in this area, other areas on campus may be included in the program."
A number of groups and individuals have already purchased bricks, including the Language Arts Division, which honored Bill Jackson and Charles Matthews. "(They) were long time Language Arts instructors who were greatly loved and respected by their colleagues," said Susan Gill, Chabot English instructor. The bricks are to "honor the contributions they made to Chabot College and to their students," she added.
As a special promotion, all 2007 graduates may order these bricks at a 50 percent discount from the original cost of $250 reduced to $125. Currently the foundation sold approximately 100 bricks.
To receive a certificate for gift giving, submit orders by Dec.20. All inscriptions are due Feb. 15, 2007. Orders will continuously be admitted, space permitting, and engraved bricks will be placed in the Square two to three times each year. But, "We are hoping to sell out Founder's Square by early 2007," Finberg stated. "We are working on plans for a very special unveiling ceremony of Founder's Square in late spring."
Order forms are in the lobby of Building 200. For more details, call the Foundation Office 510-723-6936.
