Among the new faces is nurse practitioner Rosafel Adriano, a seasoned health professional offering care under the banner of Valley Care Hospital.
This transition resulted in specific price changes for popular services that will impact a large part of the campus. Through Planned Parenthood, a health provider specializing in women's and family planning services,
Chabot female students benefited from free Pap smears and STD testing. However, through Valley Care students can only obtain basic pelvic and breast exams free. "Pap smears and STD tests are available at a low cost and cover the processing fees incurred through Quest laboratory," Adriano said.
According to Adriano, the patient population at Chabot has a high demand for such services. "Of all the patients I see, the majority are related to sexual health," she said.
That need has enacted the development of initiatives that if successful, will resolve inconveniences for patients in the future. "By partnering up with Cal State East Bay's Family PACT services we will be able to refer students to that campus where they can be seen," Adriano said.
In the interim, the alarming number of students on campus that engage in risky sex has prompted Adriano towards a proactive stance. "Students need information on STD prevention and birth control methods," she said,
"I hope to spend more time educating them in and out of the office through health fairs on campus and if necessary going into classrooms to speak." In between her efforts spent on initiatives with regards to sexual health, she is also working towards expanding the scope of services available through the Health Center.
Stress, anxiety, and other cognitive imparities are common among a student community. Constructing plans that will tackle this increasingly growing need on campus is also in the works.
