Tragedy from violence happens everyday. Unfortunately, some happens with gun violence.
Arthur Renowitzky, a student at Chabot, is a victim of gun violence. Renowitzky was shot point blank in the heart during a random robbery after leaving a nightclub. The bullet hit both lungs and shattered his spine, causing paralysis from the chest down and it lodged in his liver. He had a tube in his throat for about a month and was in a coma for three weeks after the incident.
After surviving the bullet wound, a coma and countless days on a ventilator, Arthur left the hospital with a new mission in life – to raise awareness of gun violence amongst youth.
“My number one goal is to stop gun violence,” said Renowitzky.
He spends countless hours speaking to high schools students, social clubs and organizations throughout Northern California. He speaks to them about his inspiring story of recovery – as well as what he has to do to maintain his health each day and how his foundation works to end gun violence amongst youth.
Renowitzky is now an upcoming rap artist on a mission to spread a positive message to the youth. He has an album called The Motivation Mix-tape. “Music is very therapeutic for me,” he said.
He is currently on the Berkeley All-Star, playing wheelchair basketball. “My goal is to be in the 2012 Paralympics,” he shared.
Renowitzky’s non-profit organization is holding its first comedy jam/fund raiser on April 11, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Bayside Pavilion in Alameda. Several nationally known comedians are joining the cause for the night including Bruce Jingles formerly of ABC’s Comics Unleashed and Ron Swallow formerly of MAD TV.
