Coming from around the world, 107 international students enrich Chabot College’s student population this fall.  Benin, Brazil, Burkina, Fiji, France, French Polynesia, Gabon, Germany, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Macau, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, Nepal, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Philippines, Senegal, South Africa, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan Republic of China, Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and Vietnam are the countries where they are from.

The top majors that these students pursue are business, accounting, engineering, computer science, and pre-nursing.  According to Maya Tsai, the international admissions specialist, “The admission success rate of Chabot International applicants to universities in California is about 70 percent.”

Every year, in recognition of International Education Week, the Chabot College International club members choose a country to share with the college community.  This year, the Netherlands, also known as Holland, will be recognized at the seventh annual International Dinner and a Movie.

The event takes place Tuesday, Nov. 10.  The fee is $5 for students, and $10 for the general public.  You pay with cash or check only.

The dinner will be held in Building 1000 from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.  The Movie Simon will be showing in Building 1200, Room 1232 from 7 p.m. until 8:45 p.m.  This year’s event will be hosted by both the Chabot College International Club and sponsored by the ASCC.

The dinner will feature Dutch cuisine, which is largely influenced by Indonesian cuisine.  There will be delicious items served, such as bitterballen (beef meatballs), kroketten (beef croquets), chicken satay, gado gado (an Indonesian vegetable platter), steamed rice, fresh fruit, and a Dutch spice cake with almonds known as Gevulde Speculaas Groot.

The featured movie Simon is a Dutch film with a running time of 102 minutes.  The film is not rated, but it may not be suitable for children as it does contain profanity, adult situations, adult humor, and some sexual situations.  Although the film may be more for adults, this event is family friendly and all are welcome.

As international admissions specialist Tsai said, “The students from the Netherlands have been experiencing as much of America as they can and are excited to exchange and share their culture with us.”
